This neighborhood is located in the western part of Lisbon between Belém and Alcântara. It developed around a historic core and retains a mix of traditional streets and residential areas built during the 20th century.

The built environment consists mainly of older low- to mid-rise buildings, local commerce, and several institutional sites, including university facilities and the Ajuda Palace area. Streets are often narrow and follow the natural slope of the terrain. Public transport is provided mainly by buses and tram routes connecting the neighborhood to Belém and the central parts of the city.
