This central neighbourhood is located west of Baixa and Chiado and includes areas such as Bairro Alto, Bica, and Cais do Sodré. It forms part of the historic core of Lisbon and is characterised by dense urban fabric and significant tourist activity.

The built environment consists mainly of older residential buildings with ground-floor commercial units, traditional street layouts, and limited open public space. Streets are often narrow and steep, and many buildings date from before the 20th century. The area contains a high concentration of restaurants, bars, and nightlife venues, particularly in Bairro Alto and near Cais do Sodré.

Public transport access includes metro, tram, train (Cais do Sodré station), and bus services, providing direct connections to other central districts and the Cascais line. Due to its central location and mixed-use character, noise levels can be elevated, especially at night. Property prices and short-term rental activity are generally high compared to most residential districts.
