Santa Maria Maior
This central neighbourhood forms part of the historic core of Lisbon and includes areas such as Alfama, Baixa, Castelo, and Mouraria. It contains a high concentration of monuments, traditional streets, and tourist infrastructure, and is one of the most visited parts of the city.
The built environment consists mainly of older buildings, narrow streets, and mixed residential and commercial use. Terrain is uneven in areas such as Alfama and Castelo, while Baixa follows a regular grid layout. Tourist activity is intense, and short-term rentals and retail occupy a significant share of ground-floor spaces.
